Pressure is too light. The film is not in complete contact with the garment in many areas.

The garment has not been pressed prior to transfer, therefore moisture and wrinkles within the fabric have prevented adequate contact between the transfer film and garment.

Peeling: Adhesive never fully cured (Not enough heat, pressure or time). Film easily peels from fabric, often starting at an edge.

A print can look fine after printing but start to develop cracks within a few days. This is due to the layer of adhesive becoming brittle, which can happen if the print is exposed to too much heat during pressing or if the garment is stretched or folded before the print has completely cooled and set.

Lifting of the print, especially at corners and edges, is normally caused by insufficient pressure. Because of the design of many presses the edges of the print are subjected to less pressure than the center of the design. If the pressure was on the borderline to start with the edges will start to come off first.

By recognizing the type of failure you are experiencing you can quickly identify whether it is a temperature, time or pressure issue allowing you to make the necessary changes before you print the rest of your order.

How Do You Troubleshoot Poor DTF Transfer Adhesion Step by Step?

When adhesion fails and you're not sure why, it's best to work through it in this order rather than guessing.

  1. Check the actual platen temperature with an infrared thermometer. Presses are often found to be operating 10-20°F off of the temperature displayed on the control.
  2. Check that the time of your press corresponds to the type of fabric and film you are working with (approximately 10-15 seconds for the first press).
  3. Test the pressure of your press using a paper test. This is simply closing the press on a piece of paper and then trying to pull the paper out of the press. The paper should resist the press somewhat, it should not slide out easily.
  4. The garment was pre-pressed for 3-5 seconds prior to applying transfer.
  5. Verify a post-press was applied for 5-10 seconds with the film removed.
  6. Check the peeling time against the specifications of the film used, as hot peel films fail at different times to cold peel films.
  7. Test press on scrap fabric prior to production of full order especially if new film batch or new fabric type to test adhesion.

You work your way through the list in sequence and by the time you get to the end of the list, you have usually solved the problem with 2 test presses rather than spending an afternoon messing about with them.

Press seams and zippers with a pressing pillow to distribute pressure evenly to surrounding design.

Allow prints to cool flat before folding or stacking them. Warm prints can stretch or shift in unexpected ways before their adhesive sets.

Wait 24-48 hours before first wash to allow adequate time for adhesive to fully bond.
